The Noise Protocol
Silence is overrated. Consistent sound is better.
Complete silence isn't the ideal sleep environment for most people — it makes every small noise more jarring by contrast. The goal is a consistent auditory baseline that prevents unpredictable sounds from triggering arousal responses.
The Noise Protocol provides 24 sound options including white noise, brown noise, pink noise, rain, ocean, and fan — all at consistent, non-dynamic volume. Brown noise specifically — a deeper, lower-frequency rumble — has shown strong results for people with anxiety-driven sleep disruption and ADHD-related racing thoughts at bedtime.
Portable, USB-powered, and compact enough for a carry-on. Set your sound environment wherever you sleep.
THE SCIENCE
Sound-triggered micro-arousals are one of the most underestimated causes of fragmented sleep. The auditory cortex remains partially active during sleep and responds to novel sounds — particularly those with sudden onset. Continuous broadband noise creates auditory masking: it raises the threshold at which other sounds become perceptible, reducing the probability of noise-triggered arousal. Brown noise (energy proportional to 1/f²) is particularly effective for thalamic gating suppression — reducing the intrusive thought patterns that delay sleep onset in people with active or anxious minds.
